Your body makes millions of healing substances and knows exactly how to use them.
Acupuncture is the most advanced technique for modulating and directing that natural healing system.
(Oh, and our patients always tell us how relaxing it is…)
Why Is Acupuncture So Popular?
Here are just a few reasons…
ACUPUNCTURE & EAST ASIAN MEDICINE
Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has an established clinical history of over 2500 years and is one of the oldest medical systems (along with Ayurveda) practiced worldwide. Acupuncture may perhaps be the most recognized aspect of Chinese medicine
A complete system of medicine, TCM uses many tools in the treatment of disease. These are primarily: acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, ‘tui na’ medical massage, botanical medicine, meditation and movement, general and prescriptive health exercises and diet optimization though additional techniques are sometimes used.
ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION, CUPPING, GUA SHA
Acupuncture & TCM is a comprehensive medical system based on the understanding that there is an important relationship between the mind, the body
Acupuncture modulates and streamlines how your body utilizes its own finite resources and how you through your body respond to stimulus from your environment and other people. This can also be explained in the effect on blood circulation and hormone regulation effects of acupuncture which have an analgesic (pain reducing) effect, clear stress chemicals (namely cortisol) from the bloodstream along with many other positive effects. In light of the current opioid crisis
Other aspects of East Asian Medicine such as moxibustion (a type of heat therapy), cupping (vacuum therapy), Gua Sha (a therapeutic technique that utilizes frictional scraping) and Tui Na (Chinese medical massage) are utilized along with acupuncture or in place of it when appropriate.
Acupuncture & TCM is effective for broad scope of health conditions:
- Pain (ALL TYPES, low back pain, knee pain, neck pain, headache, neuropathy and more)
- Men’s health concerns (prostate health, sexual performance, stamina, urinary difficulty)
- Cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure, hypertension, etc.)
- Common musculoskeletal disorders (carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome herniated disc related pain)
- Digestive problems (acid reflux, IBS, etc.)
- Psycho-emotional (depression, anxiety, trauma recovery)
- Smoking cessation / addiction support & detox
- Respiratory (seasonal allergies, asthma)
- Skin problems (acne, rashes)
- Fertility / reproductive issues / women’s health & menstrual cycle regulation
- Immune system support
- Stress relief
TUI NA (CHINESE MEDICAL MASSAGE)
Tui Na (Chinese medical massage) is incorporated in some way into almost every appointment. Positive effects are felt immediately with this aspect of East Asian / Oriental medicine. It functions well as an assessment tool for the practitioner, in preparing the patient for acupuncture therapy, and, or sustaining the impact of acupuncture and the close of a treatment.
It's Incredibly Safe
Acupuncture is proven to be one of the safest therapies on Earth, used by millions of people the world over on a daily basis. Sterile, single-use, disposable needles. No bleeding or pain. And, virtually no side-effects.
Acupuncture is perhaps the oldest form of therapy on planet Earth. It has stood the test of time and continues to demonstrate effectiveness today. Study after study has shown it to be effective for a wide range of health conditions. Again, because it amplifies your body’s natural healing mechanisms, it can help in virtually any situation.
Acupuncture harnesses and amplifies the most powerful healing tool ever discovered – YOU. Its power is awakening and guiding your body’s healing resources.
Acupuncture is one of the most relaxing therapies you’ll ever experience. You’ll look forward to its rejuvenating effects.
How Acupuncture Works
Calms And Balances Your Neuro-Endocrine Axis
When your nervous system is calm, your hormonal system, immune system, digestive, and circulatory systems all calm down, too. This means more hormonal balance, less inflammation, better circulation and nutrient absorption.
Opens And Regulates Microcirculation
When we use acupuncture to bring more blood flow to the glands and tissues that need the most support, those tissues naturally work better. This means key tissues like thyroid, liver, adrenals, ovaries, and others are able to function at peak levels.
Promotes Tissue Regeneration & Healing
When you use acupuncture to stimulate your body’s healing process, it gets right to work repairing and restoring all cells and tissues. Acupuncture harnesses the vast healing intelligence your body contains to help you heal faster.
Helps Your Body Sustain Optimal Function
When you apply acupuncture as a weekly therapy for several weeks, your body naturally and gently begins to undergo positive changes. This is different from drugs and surgery which represent drastic, sudden change your body may not be able to sustain. The changes induced by acupuncture are literally like new pathways your body won’t soon forget.
Want to know what acupuncture can treat? Here’s a non-exhaustive but impressive list.
Pain of all types
Nervous system disorders
DOES IT HURT?
You will not experience pain with acupuncture. You may experience warmth, heaviness, tingling, or other sensations in and around the needle site.
HOW MANY NEEDLES WILL I GET?
The number of needles depends on what we’re working on. But, generally speaking, we typically use about 10 – 12 needles per treatment.
WHERE DO YOU PLACE THE NEEDLES?
The needles are placed into strategic points on your body, called “acupoints” and or “trigger points” to stimulate circulation, calm the nervous system, and have effects on various organs functions and tissues. Most of the points are on the forearms, lower legs, lower back or tummy.
IS THERE ANY BLEEDING OR RISK OF INFECTION?
There is no bleeding. Unlike hypodermic needles (used for injections and to draw blood), acupuncture needles don’t cut you. And, they are sterile and disposable so there’s no risk of infection.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
Is acupuncture safe? Yes, acupuncture is safe when treatment is conducted by a properly trained and licensed acupuncturist. All needles used are sterile, single use and after use, disposed of in a biohazard container.
Acupuncture should be performed by Licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac.s) who are medical professionals who have completed thousands of hours of training and clinical rotations in Chinese medicine. Didactic and clinical training in an accredited Master’s of Science Degree in Acupuncture is requisite for eligibility for board examination application and testing required for licensure to practice acupuncture across the United States and Canada. Licensed acupuncturists train extensively in the use of Universal Precautions that are utilized throughout the medical professions. Licensed acupuncturists are also required to be certified in Clean Needle Technique to be eligible for licensure.
IS ACUPUNCTURE PAINFUL?
Acupuncture is not meant to be painful but it is not entirely honest to say that if done correctly a patient will never experience discomfort. While some discomfort is possible depending on the patient’s condition and state of health, acupuncture is not meant to be difficult or uncomfortable. The intention is to make your treatment experience comfortable and positive. Occasionally, some mild discomfort can be experienced. Even so, the benefit of acupuncture therapy diminishes the inconvenience of occasional mild discomfort.
WHAT IS AN ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLE?
Acupuncture needles are nothing like the wide diameter hypodermic needles that are used in blood draws or vaccinations. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine (about the thickness of human hair give or take depending on the selected diameter). Depending on the patient and therapeutic intent / treatment strategy a practitioner may select a slightly different diameter.
WHAT WILL I FEEL?
Patients often report reduction in pain, increased energy and vitality and a discovered sense of peace and a renewed relationship with their body after their first treatment.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates a biological healing response in the body. The body’s own homeostatic regulatory functions which oversee circulation, hormone balance, temperature, tissue regeneration and healing are affected. The stress hormone cortisol is cleared from the bloodstream. Circulation to relevant areas is reestablished in cases of pain and pain reduces as a result. Acupuncture is one therapeutic intervention of the East Asian Medical system which has been used for thousands of years to treat a range of ailments.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Acupuncture works as a series of treatments. As with any healthcare, it is unreasonable to make a definitive claim with regard to care required to reestablish health. The effects of acupuncture are cumulative and works when applied as a course of treatment.
2x/week for 2 weeks is recommended as a starting point. Acute conditions can be resolved within 6 sessions while more chronic conditions may require 12 or more appointments. You should feel some positive changes after your first session and after a sleep cycle to allow your system to recalibrate. At the start, sessions are closely spaced together to gain traction, feel improvement and sustain that improvement.
Thereafter, continued ‘tune up’ / maintenance treatment at a frequency of 1x/month may be scheduled to sustain healthy defaults on how you deal with stress of life, sleep, digestion, energy level by regulating your body’s modulation and use of finite physical resources.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TREATMENT?
You will most likely come for treatment once weekly. For more serious conditions – like significant chronic pain – we might recommend twice weekly to start.
HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO KEEP COMING?
Unlike many other clinics, we won’t try to get you coming weekly for months on end. Our goal is to get results efficiently and quickly so you don’t need continual follow-up. Most likely you’ll have weekly sessions for about 6-12 weeks or so. Then, we’ll need to start making room for all the friends and loved ones you’re going to send to us!
WHAT ABOUT NUTRITION AND DIET?
We are definitely able to help you with that. In fact, Chinese Medicine (the medical system of which Acupuncture is a part) is a very advanced system of food therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to try supplements as well.
